Success stories: Dolce & Gabbana

Success stories: Dolce & Gabbana 1

Dolce & Gabbana – a world famous fashion house – was founded in 1985 in Legnano, Italy by Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana. The two met at a club in 1980. For a couple of years, they worked for a designer and then opened their own consulting studio. Dolce and Gabbana used to issue separate invoices for their work even if they were involved in the same project. Once they were suggested to file a single invoice under two names. This is how the brand was born. Today it’s a highly successful business with 3,000+ employees and sales of their products worldwide.

They debuted in 1985 with a fashion show in Milan. In 1986 Dolce & Gabbana produced their own first collection. They didn’t have enough money to hire models for the show, but they had friends to help. This is one of the reasons behind “Real Women”. Then there were many other firsts: first store – 1986, knitwear – 1987, beachwear and lingerie lines – 1989, men’s collection – 1990, and a lot more to follow. Their first women’s fragrance launched in 1992 received the Perfume Academy’s 1993 award. Two years later, their first men’s fragrance claims one more award from this Academy.

One of the designs from their early collections, the so-called “Sicilian Dress”, is perhaps the most outstanding piece for Dolce & Gabbana of that time. H. Rubenstein would later describe it as “the brand's sartorial touchstone.” They draw inspiration, invent, inspire others. Their influence on fashion in 2000s is immense. In 2005, The New Yorker described them as “gli stilisti whose sensibility defines the decade.”
